It's the little tribal logo's that I find the hardest, so difficult to get the shapes right click into the picture below to see what I mean (I didn't want to make it bigger on your thread);

Stupidly, I deleted the photo of the actual truck so you'll have to take my word for it that this is an actual truck:

Hi,
just a question for Tommo and Wombat: I admire your work a lot, the skins that you create look fantastic! I can see that most of them (if not all) are inspired by actual trucks/painting schemes.
But to my personal liking, I would more often than not change the color of these skins. So question is: is it maybe possible, to make the base color customizable? So that the design of the stripes is kept, but the colors can vary? Or maybe (dreaming ) to have a metallic option for the base color?
best
Chris

Sir Aeleon,
So far as I know there is a way to make the "base color" customizable; however, I believe that only applies to the "base color" and doesn't effect the coloring of the stripes.
Metallic skins would be great, if only I knew how to make them. If anyone can give some guidance on saving a skin as Metallic that would be great. From what I understand, a Metallic paint (skin) requires special additional files.
In so far as my skins are concerned though, if you like the design of any of them BUT would like different colors then you can PM me and I would be more than happy to redo the particular skin with YOUR color scheme and send you the file.
Not much help I'm afraid but perhaps Tommo, room27au or Geronimo Express can give you/us more information.
Cheers Mate ...

Here is Lucasi’s video on how to make things metallic.
SirAeleon, as wombat says there is a way to have options on the mask but I’ve never learnt how I’m afraid as I prefer to match the real life ones as much as possible. I have done metallic ones (trans Australian for example) but then I also set those to the right colour so not sure if that stops you having a custom colour

Metallic V's Normal?
So, the question re creating skins using Metallic Paint got me thinking ... While the posted video link is comprehensive, I found a visual guide that is easy, straight forward and appears) to work; at least when I put the Metallic settings into ETS2 the skin was exported and showed in the game.
Bottom line is this, I redid one of my skins with the Metallic Settings and see absolutely NO difference between it and the Non Metallic versions:
Normal Skin (Non Metallic) -
Metallic Version -
I don't see a bit of difference???
Here is the link to the tutorial with Metal Flake .DDS:

Hi Wombat,
if you're using ETS Studio to output your mod file for a metallic paintjob there is a bug which prevents metallic from showing up. You'll need to open the def file that ETS Studio created and edit line #27: "flipflake: false" and change it to: "flipflake: true"
If you want to change the size of the metallic flakes or the distance between the individual flakes you can edit lines #33 & 34 which are "flake_uvscale" and "flake_density" respectively. The line "flake_shininess" controls the reflectivity of the metallic flake, if set too high you'll notice that it creates a blooming effect across the curved edges which will tend to blow out your colour.
Cheers
Ian

Thanks Ian, appreciate the advice and help.
I'll make the changes for the above truck and see what happens.
Added after 15 minutes 18 seconds:
Ian,
Made the changes in the def file and the skin didn't show in Mod Manager or the Dealership? Changed the "Flipflake" back to false and the truck reappeared?

I haven't used ETS2 Studio - other than the TOBJ Editor - for years now because I have a couple of 'stock' def files where I just change the unit name and other unique parameters.
Take from this what you will:
NB:
Where "Aussie Flyer" and "austflag" are the unique parameters, with "ken200" being the unit name.
Take from this what you will:
Code: Select all
SiiNunit
{
accessory_paint_job_data : austflag.ken200.paint_job
{
name: "Aussie Flyer"
price: 1
unlock: 0
icon: "austflag"
base_color: (0.0, 0.0, 0.0)
stock: false
flipflake: true
airbrush: true
paint_job_mask: "/vehicle/truck/upgrade/paintjob/austflag.tobj"
flip_color: (0.15, 0.15, 0.15)
flake_color: (1, 1, 1)
flip_strength: 0.93
flake_uvscale: 20
flake_density: 0.6
flake_shininess: 30
flake_clearcoat_rolloff: 5
flake_noise: "/material/custom/flake_noise.tobj"
base_color_locked: false
flip_color_locked: false
flake_color_locked: false
alternate_uvset: false
}
}
NB:

It makes no sense why changing the "flipflake" from "false" to "true" would stop the paint mod showing up completely
Here's a working metallic def file from my K200 Prestige Metallic paintwork which you can try, just change the text "paintname" to whatever your internal name is for your paintwork.
Edit: room217au was too quick for me

The def file above lets you have graphics (bitmaps) on your truck as well as metallic paint.. thus..

Hi room217au,
if airbrush=false and flipflake=true it'll produce just a basic metallic paintjob without applying the skin, the same as the standard SCS "custom metallic" with the three customisable colour selector chips for base colour, metallic flake colour and flip colour. The skin will initally just look black until the colours are adjusted, so it can look like the paintjob hasn't worked at all. ( Providing that mask_r_locked, mask_g_locked, mask_b_locked and base_color_locked are also set to false).

Hmm, I'm going to have to look at this Metallic thing a bit closer. I changed the DEF file to mirror both the examples given by room217au above and from Geronimo Express's Metallic Skin. As soon as I do that, the skin disappears from MOD Manager and from the Dealership.
I'll try another metallic paint later tonight - start from fresh - and just modify one of the def files instead of using ETS2 and see what happens. If that doesn't work then I'll just stick to "standard paint jobs
