Peterbilt 359 - fps low on 2080ti /4k
Hi,
Firstly I just want to say how much I am enjoying the 359 truck and the quality of the model is excellent.
However, this has also meant that for the first time my 2080ti can no longer keep up and hold 60fps @ 4k (inside the cab) with all the extra detail.
I run this game without this mod at a constant 60fps but this mod has brought my system to its knees. Well not quite, but its now 45-50fps.
This is probably unavoidable and I probably need to knock back some graphics settings with this mod while in use but I just thought I would mention it in case there is something that can be done.
thankyou
David

Not wishing to be argumentative but 45 - 50 fps is darn good considering the human eye can't detect anything over 27 fps.
Exactly what effect is the truck having on the game other than a drop in a figure?
Added after 2 minutes 24 seconds:
Out of curiosity ... where do you find the "fps" for the game? I'd be interested to see what fps I am getting with my RTX 2070 with all settings set to maximum.
Added after 19 minutes 8 seconds:
Okay, downloaded FRAPS and I am getting 55 fps as well and the game runs very smoothly.

Likewise as not to risk being the annoying newb to the forum I will have to agree to disagree on that one.
I'm using the nvidia Geforce experience overlay at the moment for fps. I have it on all the time in the bottom right corner.
For me personally I find it immersion breaking in sims when the fps drops to a certain point. Some games that dont rely on fluidity you can get away with it but not sims, imo.
I'm probably expecting too much given the level of detai on the 359 interior and the fact ats is on DX9. I'm a graphics whore so have all my settings maxed out and resolution scaling set above normal. Its the first mod that has made the fps drop at all with these settings but I do appreciate why.

Quick update - I had a little mess around with the settings and have come up with the following which means I keep everything maximum except one. It seemed the more reflective surfaces I focused on the more taxing it became on the GPU so dropped the reflections down to medium and left everything else max with 200% scaling which gives me excellent visuals.
This may or may not be useful to someone else but these are my settings on my rig and I am back to running a solid 60fps. Very Pleased. :)

I was interested in this, my preference is always for a smoother flowing game.
My specs are low: GTX970, I7 6700, 8GB RAM therefore I'm nowhere near 4k or anything like that. Screen resolution is 1920x1080 and therefore my settings are all set to high, 300% scaling, except shadow quality which is Ultra.*
All on ATS and captured either in San Diego for Peterbilt or Los Angeles for stuff bought from the Kenworth shop, did day/dry then night/rain for a min - max load on my system.
Peterbilt 359 v2.1 - 43 sunny/dry, 35-38 night/rain
Peterbilt 359 v2.0 - 60 sunny/dry, 45-50 night/rain
Kenworth T908 v6.4 - 55-60 sunny/dry, 50-55 night/rain
Western Star 4800 v3.3 - 60 sunny/dry, 53-60 night/rain
Mack Superliner v4.3 - 60 sunny/dry, 50-55 night/rain
Then I tried a few other mods:
Vipers 379/389 - 60 sunny/dry, 53-60 night/rain
Freightliner FLB - 60 all the time
Put the K108 in ETS2 and did the same - Riga was the location: 58-60 sunny/dry, 50-55 night/rain**
Think I need to update my GPU
*I run the HDR fix by nightson in ATS as a graphics adjustment.
**setting are different here, scaling is only 200% - weather quality, shadow quality and mirror distance are all ultra. I use NextGen1.5 weather/graphics adjustments.

It´s fine, when it´s good for you
Yes you are correct its not very appealing. I just sacrifice super shiny surfaces in favour of less aliasing which is why I like to increase scaling (even at 4k with the games own anti-aliasing enabled) . I notice that the reflections set to high brings its own aliasing too on reflective surfaces. Not so pretty but it seems there are a couple of compromises to be made here.

Get yourself the biggest baddest Intel chip and even with the same grafix card, there will be a marked improvement in fps.

Okay then.David_R wrote:I'm on a 7700K @ 5.2ghz
The game has limitations in terms of how much it processes at a given time. This is especially evident in both model size and the number of buffers it allocates to load those models.
The Peterbilt 351 and the T908 especially have enormous interior models. Something like 70Mb. I'm not talking about textures, I'm talking about the actual 3D model that all those textures are applied to during runtime. Add to this the int_ext models are just as big. Additionally, the truck models themselves are far far bigger than the standard SCS ones.
The default allocation for loading of models is 22Mb. What this means is that a 3D model, say 66Mb, takes three 'blocks' of 22Mb to load that one model. With the interior model also containing animations, this can bog down almost any machine. Not because the machine is struggling, but because the game is.
Try this:
In Steam Library, right-click American Truck Simulator. From the drop-down list, select Properties.
In the window that opens, click "Set Launch Options".
In the new window that opens, there's a text box. If it is empty, copy and paste this:
-mm_max_resource_size 80 -mm_max_tmp_buffers_size 960
then click Ok.
If you already have text in that box, simply add a space after the existing text before copy and pasting the above.
What this does is increase model-loading size to 80Mb and without being technical it also allocates 11 loading buffers. Default is 5.
That should make a difference for you. You should then be able to set 300% scaling, HDR, antialiasing, etc so the game looks better too.
Two wrongs don't make a right, but three lefts.. do.

This made no difference, unfortunately.
I have since tried the 359 in ETS and it runs fine.
I appreciate the fact we are talking about a game engine that doesn't cater for modern hardware and this is a very impressive 3d model internally and externally. I hope that maybe there is some optimisation that can be done to make this model work better with ATS by the devs in a future update?

It is DX9 technology. SCS have made noises about upgrading the game engine to DX11 (or better) but no timeframe has been hinted at.
They are an indie software company so time moves fairly slowly. It was mentioned many times in SCS forums that the game is aimed at the mid-range computer market so that the majority of people can enjoy the sim. There are command-line options (such as the ones I posted earlier) which will boost performance - I know it did for me - but that's all we have for now.
It's curious to me that you don't have warnings in your game.log about resource buffer size, even though you are using the default allocations of 22Mb.
Could you do me a favour and purchase the T908 as stock then drive that truck? Even if you just get in the cab at the agrage after purchase then quit the game. The game.log - near the end - should have warnings about the pmg exceeding resource buffer defaults.
If not, then it warrants further personal investigation by me as to whether I should upgrade to Intel. Hmm.

I have checked the game.log before and after adding the launch commands and yes the buffer error does indeed clear. However, the performance remains the same, for me atleast.
I was going to buy several trucks today that I am keen to purchase but if I cant get things running right on my rig for ATS I dont really want to risk it.
One error that I do get regarding the model is the following.
<ERROR> [baked_model] Too many indices in 'cabin' (80182) for material ''
Any further suggestions welcome. :)

The launch options switches I posted really help my machine deal with the enormous model sizes. I have AMD Ryzen 5 6-core 3.2GHz CPU tho.
At the end of June I'll be in a position hopefully to swap out the AMD chip for Intel.
I know ETS2 and ATS are CPU intensive. It's something to do with the Prism3D engine not multi-core enabled/capable?
Once we get further down the track, I think that SCS will eventually bite the bullet and raise the bar in terms of what hardware you need to run these games effectively. I mean iD Software did this everytime they released their games. Ever since DooM back in 94. But SCS seem reluctant or maybe even afraid to exclude a whole bunch of folks from playing their games simply because their hardware/OS isn't up to scratch.
Added after 2 minutes 16 seconds:
PS. The best thing SCS did was with making ATS 64bit only. It does run on 32bit OS but that has been repeatedly announced as not permanent and essentially experimental.
