Model Decimation with some success.

Unread post #1by room217au » 19.04.2019, 15:04

Today I managed to get Blender 2.79b working with SCS Tools and Conversion Tools to both convert and import into Blender, the T908 interior model.
After some trial and error - there are a mess of missing files but only because some of the tobj files call for dds files in the ATS base.scs - I managed to reduce the interior model size to some 550,000 vertices without losing much quality, if any.
This is a substantial reduction from some 1.6 million to begin with.

Why are there four hoods?
How can I get rid of three of them? Do I just delete #2, #3 and #4 from the Scene?

Some materials files are calling for .tobj files that are either in the wrong directory, or just don't exist in the mod's base.
Blender is having a fit with these files and is complicit in throwing the errors on export that I'm seeing.

I have by no means perfected this process but I will.
I have a couple of issues with the export/conversion process.

I am determined to make this truck driveable with mid-range computers because at the moment it is a frame hog of magnanimous proportions.
Any help with Blender would be greatly appreciated.

Good luck on making what your attempting work ... and hope it does. Anything that maintains the "quality" but reduces the file size is a huge bonus.
Cheers Mate ...

Finally completed. After much searching around SCS Forums, the web, asking questions of accomplised modders, I've managed to achieve my goal.
T908 v6.5
Interior model reduced to 29Mb from 73Mb
Ext_interior model reduced to 23Mb from 56Mb
Truck model remains untouched at 37Mb.
All I did was as I said above. Simply 'decimated' the studded fabric that lines the walls of the sleeper cab. This alone was enough to remove almost a million vertices from both interior and ext_interior models. I needed to increase the resource_buffer settings to 44/488 tho.
To look at the interior of the sleeper cab now, you wouldn't really notice any difference.

.. until you see the fps counter at 60fps in the city.

Currently fitted with Kriechbaum's magnificent Mack E9 engine, a 24sp Spicer trnsmission.. and it is glorious.

Sooo...
Managed to purchase a 32" UltraHD monitor yesterday.
Wow. The trucks look sensational.
New monitor runs at 75Hz refresh. Wicked stuff.

Currently working on T609 for optimization and then re-visiting the 908 after DX11 version lands.

room217au,
T609 has long been optimized on ex_interior
interior stay in 3d
t908 in the version 6.5.1 optimized ex_interior as t609
interior It doesn’t look good without 3d

Your records will show you that I purchased the T908 a long time ago. It truly is an awesome truck.
It was only about 6 months ago that I upgraded my PC and I thought this would help. It did, but only to a certain degree.
ETS2 and ATS only allow for a certain size of model and while the game(s) will load trucks with large model sizes, the FPS is horrible.

I should explain that all I did was remove vertices in a non-destructive way. 73Mb is an extremely large model for an interior. My first effort in reducing the size wasn't good but I am learning more. I repeated the process on T908 v6.5 and it's beautiful to drive now.

I don't know about other people who drive the 908 but I don't look inside the sleeper cab that often.. if at all.. so the quality of the fabric/leather coverings are not important to me. Even with decimation, the walls of the cabin are not that different.

The ext_interior model can be a lot smaller in size because it is only for viewing the interior from outside the cab. SCS trucks ext_interior files are like 3Mb maybe 4Mb.

T908 ext_interior model looks great, even when decimated:

Keep up the good work. Love ya trucks :)
